The official euro is the euro's price at Banco Nación: the official dollar converted at the day's euro-dollar parity, plus the bank's margin. Every bank publishes its own. The informal-market euro is the blue euro.
Public sources for the official euro disagree more than for the dollar, because each takes a different bank or time of day. Each is held against its own official dollar at the euro-dollar parity of the day, and one that strays from that reference stays out of the average.
What it is used for. It is the rate banks apply to euro transfers and to card spending in Europe, plus the withholding of the card dollar, which applies just the same. Argentines travelling to Europe usually do better carrying dollars and changing them there, or paying by card, than buying euros at home.
Frequently asked questions
What is the official euro rate today?
Today the official euro sells at ARS 1,750.88 at Banco Nación.
Official euro versus blue euro: what is the difference?
The official euro is the bank's, with quota and paperwork; the blue euro is the cueva's, free. Whenever the dollar has a gap the euro has the same one, because the blue euro is derived from the blue dollar at the day's parity.
